Great place to cool down in the river
This small reserve on a curve of the Bargo River is a pleasant place to stop and have a break if youre travelling, or even to take the family for an outing - but bring your own everything, there are no facilities. The river when not in flood is fine for paddling, and some spots are deep enough for a dip. The rocks can be slippery, though. This was a crossing place of the Great South Road, as the Hume Highway was once known. On the far side lay the dreaded Bargo Brush, haunt of murderous escaped convicts, and supposedly worst stretch of road in the colony of NSW. You can still see some of the old causeway in the river bed, and if you search carefully on the Bargo bank, youll find ruts from iron wheels in the rocks. This was a popular camping spot for bullockies waiting for the road to dry out after rains, and for campers in the early days of motoring. Youll find their names and initials carved in the rocky river bed, when the waters uncover them.A sign advises that platypus have been observed here.
